Charter of Demands by Feminist Activists & Women's Rights Organisations in Lebanon | A Gendered Disaster Response Plan: Learning from the Past
Feminist activists and women’s rights organisations in Lebanon, signatories to this Charter, are concerned with the human toll of the explosion of the Beirut port which took place on August 4th, 2020. This has come against a background of severe economic hardship, an unprecedented loss in the value of the local currency, spiking unemployment and a degradation of public services, all of which exacerbated by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. We have been reeling from the political system, which is sectarian, patriarchal and corrupt and has oppressed women for decades. Even before the explosion, we were under-represented in national political institutions, comprising only 23% of the workforce, and unable to marry/divorce/inherit the way we want to. Read more.
Geneva
As we all continue to watch our world face an unprecedented public health challenge in the fight against COVID-19, and to adjust to new measures put in place in Switzerland to flatten the curve of the second wave of the virus, the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, Geneva (NGO CSW Geneva) remains united, active, and stands in solidarity with our global sisterhood of NGO Committees on the Status of Women during the pandemic.  Although the safety and well-being of everyone requires us to physically separate from one another, members of NGO CSW Geneva remain committed to the empowerment and defense of the rights of women and girls across the globe.
That said, our member organizations have demonstrated impressive adaptability, innovative spirit and potential for action in support of COVID-19 relief and resilience building efforts around the world. Read more for some examples of the impactful work accomplished by the NGO CSW Geneva membership in the past months.

The 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing was a turning point for the global women’s movement. The outcome of the conference, the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action (BPfA), was adopted unanimously by 189 countries and is considered "the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing women’s rights."

What did the Beijing Declaration achieve? How are youth activists maximizing Beijing +25  to advance women’s human rights today? How can Art be a tool for activism? Through intergenerational dialogue between Activists and Artists, this series will explore innovations in women’s rights advocacy, culminating with a call to action during the 65th Commission on the Status of Women.

The series is organized by the Feminist and Women's Movement Action Plan, the Global Health Justice and Governance Program at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, and the Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute.
