Advocating for & Supporting Survivors: A Call to Action during the 16 Days of Activism Campaign

Authored by: Angela Sabblah, NGO CSW/NY Social Media & Communications Intern

Every year, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) unites people worldwide to combat violence against women and girls. It’s more than an awareness campaign; it’s a call to action to challenge the cultural, social, and institutional factors that perpetuate violence and discrimination.

GBV impacts 1 in 3 women globally. Yet behind every statistic is a survivor with a story of resilience and the need for justice. This year, we urge everyone to take actionable steps to support survivors and prevent future violence:

  1. Speak Out: Amplify survivor voices and stories by sharing credible resources, survivor testimonials, and raising awareness about support services available in your community.
  2. Support Local Organizations: Many organizations provide essential support, resources, and counseling for survivors. Donating or volunteering with these groups helps extend their reach and impact.
  3. Advocate for Policy Change: Push for policies that protect survivors and hold abusers accountable. This can include advocating for stronger workplace protections, more accessible reporting processes, and funding for shelters and support services.
  4. Educate yourself and your loved ones: Misconceptions around GBV often enable it to continue. Educate yourself and your community on the different forms of GBV, the signs of abuse, and how to support someone experiencing it.

By utilizing our collective efforts, we can create a world where survivors are empowered, perpetrators are held accountable, and everyone can live free from harm. For this year’s campaign, let’s turn awareness into action and be a voice for those who need it most. We can make a difference together.
