A Promise to the Future: Honoring Human Rights Day and Empowering Women Worldwide

Authored by: Angela Sabblah, NGO CSW/NY Social Media & Communications Intern

As we approach Human Rights Day today, 10 December, which marks the close of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign, we’re reminded of our collective duty to create a world where all individuals, especially women and girls, live free from violence and discrimination. This year, let’s renew our commitment to a future where women’s rights are fundamental human rights and where gender equality is more than a goal – it’s a guarantee.

Gender-based violence remains one of the persistent violations of human rights globally, affecting 1-in-3 women. This stark reality is a wake-up call. We must strive to protect, uplift, and empower women and girls. As the United Nations underscores in its mission, human rights encompasses safety and dignity for everyone. These values pave the way for equality for all. To honor them, we must continue to fight for the rights of those most vulnerable.

With this, what does a promise to the future look like? We’ve come up with a list of suggested, actionable steps to achieve this goal and help build a more inclusive future:

    1. Equal Access to Education: By ensuring every girl and woman has access to quality education, we empower them with knowledge and the tools to break cycles of violence and poverty.
    2. Legal Protections and Justice: We must strengthen policies and laws to ensure survivors are heard and receive justice.
    3. Economic Empowerment: Supporting Financial independence is one of the most powerful ways to combat violence and inequality against women. Providing training, equal job opportunities, and financial services tailored to women’s needs will be the perfect step forward in the fight against GBV.
    4. Safe Spaces and Support: Every community, workplace, and institution should offer safe spaces where women can seek support without fear or retribution. Accessible counseling, shelters, and helplines are crucial lifelines for those who experience violence.

As we focus on Human Rights Day, let us promise to strive for a better and safer future for all women everywhere. Starting now, we can pave the way for future generations of women and girls and ensure their rights, voices, and access to opportunities will always be protected.
